Realtek High Definition Audio Driver Installation
I was just setting up Windows XP SP2 on a new motherboard (a Geforce6100PM-M2) with Realtek HD Audio and encountered a problem that I’ve had before. There are a lot of message threads online discussing the problem without solution.
If you have Realtek HD Audio that doesn’t work properly, or if you get the message “install realtek hd audio driver failure” while trying to install the Realtek driver here’s how you fix it:
(Update 03/05/2009) First, download the latest Realtek HD driver. For some reason Realtek doesn’t have static links to the file and has chosen to use some goofy Javascript links so I can’t include the link here to make it easier.
That means you’ll have to browse to the Realtek website, and jump through a hoop first (click on the “I accept to [sic] the above” box) before you can select the appropriate file (for XP it’s called “Windows 2000, Windows XP/2003(32/64 bits) Driver only (Executable file)”) and then click “GO” to download the file. As of 3/5/2009 the latest version is R2.17.
Then you need to go to My Computer | Properties | Hardware | Device Manager and expand the system devices. There should be a device listed called “Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio.” Right click and disable this device. Then right click and uninstall the device. (It won’t let you uninstall it if it’s enabled.)
After you’ve done this, run the Realtek driver setup you downloaded.
This should install the driver properly. After a reboot, you should have audio!
